Struggling private eye Lew Harper (Paul Newman) takes a simple missing-person case that quickly spirals into something much more complex. Elaine Sampson (Lauren Bacall), recently paralyzed in a horse-riding accident, wants Harper to find her missing oil baron husband, but her tempestuous teenage stepdaughter Miranda (Pamela Tiffin) thinks Mrs. Sampson knows more than she's letting on. The film is based on Ross Macdonald's 1949 mystery "The Moving Target," featuring private eye Lew Archer.

When a gunman opens fire on a crowded city bus in San Francisco, Detective Dave Evans (Anthony Costello) is killed, along with the man he'd been following in relation to a murder. Evans' partner, Sgt. Jake Martin (Walter Matthau), becomes obsessed with solving the case -- but all the witnesses are dead. Martin enlists a new partner, Leo Larsen (Bruce Dern), to help with the frustrating case, and when the pair is told to drop the investigation, they disobey the orders and close in on the killer.

Hans Baerlach (Martin Ritt) is a Swiss police detective who has dedicated much of his career to pursuing powerful and allegedly murderous businessman Richard Gastmann (Robert Shaw). Though Baerlach's partner (Donald Sutherland) meets his demise while investigating Gastmann, his replacement, Walter Tschanz (Jon Voight), is undaunted. Meanwhile, the lovely Anna Crawley (Jacqueline Bisset) becomes involved in the case, which proceeds to take many twists and turns.

After Dan leaves town for a few weeks to defend a dispossessed Japanese-American, Daisy impetuously marries Peter. When Dan returns, the complicated affairs become even more tangled.

Connecticut prosecutor Henry Harvey (Dana Andrews), faced with a political maelstrom in the wake of the shooting death of a Catholic priest on a city street corner, feels tremendous pressure to prosecute a vagrant ex-soldier whom Police Chief Robinson (Lee J. Cobb) apprehended in connection with the crime. After the vagrant confesses, it looks to be an open and shut case, but Harvey remains unconvinced and chooses to risk his career in order to discover the truth.
