How Green Was My Valley

How Green Was My Valley

Huw Morgan (Roddy McDowall), the academically inclined youngest son in a proud family of Welsh coal miners, witnesses the tumultuous events of his young life during a period of rapid social change. At the dawn of the 20th century, a miners' strike divides the Morgans: the sons demand improvements, and the father (Donald Crisp) doesn't want to rock the boat. Meanwhile, Huw's eldest sister, Angharad (Maureen O'Hara), pines for the new village preacher, Mr. Gruffydd (Walter Pidgeon).

Carousel

Based on the lauded Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, this film follows the romance of Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae), a charming carousel barker, and Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), a pretty worker from a nearby mill. When the attractive young couple gets married, they also both find themselves unemployed, which puts a strain on their relationship. When Billy finds out that Julie is pregnant, he resorts to extreme measures to get money, a decision that leads to tragedy.

Ball of Fire

Hoping to update his chapter on modern slang, encyclopedia writer Professor Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper) ventures into a chic nightclub. Inside, he meets the snarky burlesque performer "Sugarpuss" O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck). Fascinated by her command of popular jargon, Potts invites her to stay with him. But, unknown to Potts, she is the fiancée of a mobster (Dana Andrews) and wanted by the police. In the ensuing mayhem, Potts must stay on his toes or be swallowed up by bigger fish.

The President's Lady

Future president Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) rises to fame as a military hero and rescues love of his life Rachel Donelson (Susan Hayward) from an abusive marriage. A man from Tennessee -- which was at the time the edge of the American frontier -- Jackson endures as his critics and opponents characterize him as a rogue from the lawless West. But when his rival, Charles Dickinson (Carl Betz), insults Rachel, Jackson challenges him to a duel that results in a national controversy.

Soldier of Fortune

Jane Hoyt (Susan Hayward) comes to Hong Kong to find her husband, Louis (Gene Barry), a photojournalist who has been missing for three months. Learning he is being held captive by the Chinese government, she seeks the help of smuggler Hank Lee (Clark Gable), who has a shady reputation for being able to get anything done. Jane and Hank are instantly attracted to each other, but Jane will not abandon her husband. To win her heart, Hank must find a way to rescue Louis.

A Blueprint for Murder

Whitney Cameron (Joseph Cotten) is in a quandary: he's attracted to his beautiful sister-in-law, Lynn (Jean Peters), but also harbors serious suspicions about her. Her husband, Cameron's brother, died under mysterious circumstances, and now that the death of her stepchild, Polly, has been attributed to poisoning, he suspects that Lynn is after his late brother's estate, and killing everyone in her way. Cameron fears that nephew could be next, and determines to make sure no harm comes to him.

Fear in the Night

The dream is unusually vivid: Bank employee Vince Grayson (DeForest Kelley) finds himself murdering a man in a sinister octagonal-shaped room lined with mirrors while a mysterious woman breaks into a safe. It is so vivid, in fact, that Vince suspects it may have really happened. To get the dream off his mind, he goes on a picnic with some relatives. When a thunderstorm forces his party into a nearby mansion, Vince discovers that the bizarre room does exist, and it means nothing but trouble.

Somewhere in the Night

After a World War II injury, George Taylor's (John Hodiak) memory of his life is fuzzy, to say the least. In an effort to reverse his amnesia, he tracks down alleged murderer and thief Larry Garter, from whom he received a letter. Along the way, he meets lounge singer Christy Smith (Nancy Guild) and police inspector Donald Kendall (Lloyd Nolan). They aid him in the search for Garter and his stolen loot, but all find themselves mired in a much bigger mystery than they anticipated.

Jeopardy

A woman (Barbara Stanwyck) lures a fugitive (Ralph Meeker) to help her husband (Barry Sullivan), trapped under a piling at low tide.

Nora Prentiss

A successful and hardworking doctor, Richard Talbot (Kent Smith) strays from his marriage when he meets Nora Prentiss (Ann Sheridan), a beautiful nightclub performer. While Richard doesn't want to end his affair with Nora, he also can't face divorcing his wife (Rosemary DeCamp) and struggles to resolve his inner conflict. A surprising opportunity leads Richard to develop an unlikely plan that could allow him and Nora to run off together, but the scheme may not work out the way he intended.

Border Incident

In this topical film noir, a gang smuggles illegal Mexican farmworkers across the California border and kills the immigrants before they can return home. When federal agents Pablo Rodriguez (Ricardo Montalban) and Jack Bearnes (George Murphy) go undercover to overturn the organization, they find themselves face-to-face with its leader, Owen Parkson (Howard da Silva). The agents quickly realize that what began as a routine murder case has become a struggle for survival.
