Joan Graham (Sylvia Sidney) works as the secretary to the public defender. Unfortunately, she's fallen madly in love with a criminal by the name of Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda). Convinced that Eddie is a good man with bad luck, she pulls some strings and gets Eddie released from prison early. The two get married, but while Eddie tries to fly right, he soon discovers he can't change his nature. His past comes knocking at their door, and the couple is forced to go into hiding.
They Live by Night
Wrongly convicted for murder as a teen, "Bowie" Bowers breaks out of prison with two other criminals, Chickamaw and T-Dub. While hiding out, Bowie meets Chickamaw's niece, Keechie, and they bond. Wanting to clear his name, Bowie decides to participate in a robbery with the others, so he can afford a lawyer. As he gets drawn further into crime, Bowie contemplates running away with Keechie and starting over.

After being away for 10 years, Mae Doyle (Barbara Stanwyck) returns to her California hometown following an affair with a married politician, which came to an end when he died and his relatives sued for her inheritance. Mae begins dating Jerry (Paul Douglas), an amiable fisherman, while his bitter best friend, Earl (Robert Ryan), a cynic married to a burlesque dancer, finds himself attracted to her. Mae and Jerry marry, but soon she gets bored and starts an affair with just-divorced Earl.
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
Young Martha inadvertently causes the death of her cruel, authoritarian aunt. Martha lies to the cops, and Walter, who saw the crime, corroborates the girl's story. Eventually, they wed out of convenience; the meek Walter is genuinely in love, and Martha thinks that her secret is safe since she has married the one witness to her aunt's death. However, when her childhood pal, Sam, shows up, Martha knows her dark past may not stay a secret for long.

Wing and a Prayer
Flight Cmdr. Bingo Harper (Don Ameche) is trying to get pilots like ex-film star Ens. Hallam "Oscar" Scott (William Eythe) up to snuff, as he and fellow Naval officers work to defeat the Japanese during World War II. As the aircraft carrier transporting Harper and his men journeys through the Pacific, U.S. pilots fend off Japanese attacks, biding their time until they're ready to launch a strike of their own. In the Wild West, the Rawhide way station becomes the center of a hostage situation when four murderous fugitives (Hugh Marlowe, Dean Jagger, Jack Elam, George Tobias) take it over in a heist scheme. After killing the stationmaster (Tyrone Power), the criminals keep the only other employee, Sam Todd (Edgar Buchanan), alive to avoid outside suspicion by maintaining a front of normalcy. But Todd and the other hostages, Vinnie Holt (Susan Hayward) and her young niece, plot to make an escape.

Handsome vagabond Ben Quick (Paul Newman) returns to the Mississippi town his late father called home, but rumors of his dad's pyromaniac tendencies follow him as soon as he sets foot there. How Green Was My Valley
Huw Morgan (Roddy McDowall), the academically inclined youngest son in a proud family of Welsh coal miners, witnesses the tumultuous events of his young life during a period of rapid social change. At the dawn of the 20th century, a miners' strike divides the Morgans: the sons demand improvements, and the father (Donald Crisp) doesn't want to rock the boat. Meanwhile, Huw's eldest sister, Angharad (Maureen O'Hara), pines for the new village preacher, Mr. Gruffydd (Walter Pidgeon).
The Man From Snowy River
After the death of his father, proud young Jim Craig (Tom Burlinson) sets out to become his own man. Taking a job with horse rancher Harrison (Kirk Douglas), Craig is treated poorly by the more experienced cowboys, but wins the heart of the rancher's daughter, Jessica (Sigrid Thornton), when he helps her break a high-strung colt and later saves her life. When he's unfairly blamed for the loss of an expensive horse, Craig fights to restore his honor and prove that he's worthy of Jessica's hand.
The Man From Laramie
Will Lockhart (James Stewart) comes to the ranch town of Coronado looking for the man who is selling rifles to the Apaches, because his brother was killed with one. There he runs into Alec Waggoman (Donald Crisp), an aging rancher with a violent son named Dave (Alex Nicol). A conflict between Dave and Vic (Arthur Kennedy), Waggoman's top aide, helps Lockhart uncover the source of the rifles -- and also gets him involved in the power struggles at the Waggoman ranch.
Fool's Parade
Mattie Appleyard (James Stewart) has spent the last 40 years behind bars and is finally out. A model prisoner and a hard worker, Appleyard saved up over $25,000 while in prison and entrusted the money to prison guard "Doc" Council (George Kennedy). Appleyard, along with his two ex-con friends, plans to become a respectable citizen by using the money to open a general store -- but it soon becomes clear that Doc and an unscrupulous banker have no intention of letting him go straight.
