The Driver
An enigmatic man of fast cars and few words, the Driver (Ryan O'Neal) excels at maneuvering getaway vehicles through the tightest of spots, making him quite in demand in criminal circles. His skill and notoriety, however, infuriate the Detective (Bruce Dern), who becomes obsessed with taking the Driver down. Luckily for the speed-loving anti-hero, the Player (Isabelle Adjani), a gorgeous and resourceful woman, is around to help him elude the Detective.
The Laughing Policeman
When a gunman opens fire on a crowded city bus in San Francisco, Detective Dave Evans (Anthony Costello) is killed, along with the man he'd been following in relation to a murder. Evans' partner, Sgt. Jake Martin (Walter Matthau), becomes obsessed with solving the case -- but all the witnesses are dead. Martin enlists a new partner, Leo Larsen (Bruce Dern), to help with the frustrating case, and when the pair is told to drop the investigation, they disobey the orders and close in on the killer.

The Executioner's Song
In this fact-based film, Gary Gilmore (Tommy Lee Jones), an Indiana man who just finished serving a lengthy stay in prison, tries to start anew by moving to Utah. As their relationship quickly deteriorates, Gary goes on a murderous rampage, leaving two dead. During his trial, he demands capital punishment; a media circus ensues and outsiders look to profit from his story.
The Flim Flam Man
A veritable master of the trade, con man Mordecai Jones (George C. Scott) has taken part in his fair share of scams. When he happens upon a young army deserter, Curley (Michael Sarrazin), Jones decides to pass on his knowledge of swindling to the likable novice. As the two blaze through the rural South, Curley meets Bonnie Lee Packard (Sue Lyon), a girl of privilege, who helps the two crooks evade the local sheriff (Harry Morgan). But Curley soon questions his newfound profession.

"Dynamite Hands" follows an up-and-coming boxer (Harry Hamlin) with a heart of gold who stumbles into a life of excess when he falls for a nightclub singer (Trish Van Devere) and meets a sleazy gangster (Eli Wallach). In "Baxter's Beauties of 1933," a Broadway producer (George C. Scott) learns that he is dying and attempts to create one last hit show.
The Last American Hero
Junior Jackson (Jeff Bridges) is a Southern boy with a penchant for driving too fast along his native North Carolina backroads. But when his father, Elroy (Art Lund), is jailed for moonshining, Junior decides to go pro, if only to be able to buy Elroy a few prison privileges. With the help of his brother, Wayne (Gary Busey), he slowly climbs the ranks of the various racing circuits. Often at odds with corporate sponsors, Jackson nevertheless becomes one of the first celebrities of NASCAR.

Gidget

Now, Francie, whom the boys call Gidget -- short for girl midget -- wants to learn how to surf, so she buys a used board and dives into the sunny world of Southern California surfing fever.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady
When a yearly high-stakes poker game begins between the five richest men in Laredo, Texas, all other activity in the Wild West town comes to a stop as everyone gathers to watch the action. Recovering gambler Meredith (Henry Fonda), passing through town on the way to San Antonio, gets roped into the game by lawyer Otto Habershaw (Kevin McCarthy). When the stress of the game becomes too much to bear, his disapproving wife, Mary (Joanne Woodward), must step in to save the family fortune.

The film is based on Ross Macdonald's 1949 mystery "The Moving Target," featuring private eye Lew Archer.

Sophie's Choice
Stingo (Peter MacNicol), a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her lover Nathan (Kevin Kline), he learns that Sophie is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.
