Copa del Rei Copa del Rey (meaning "King's Cup" in Spanish) is the oldest football tournament in Spanish football history. Inaugurated in 1903, it is the second most prestigious tournament after the Spanish La Liga. Copa del Rey is organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and is open to all Spanish football clubs, and is considered the most important domestic cup competition. During the tournament, clubs from both the First and Second Division will battle for the trophy. The current season of Copa del Rey features 83 teams with teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Valencia CF, and Sevilla FC competing for the cup. Each season begins with regionalized group-state tournaments in the autumn, followed by a round of 16 and quarterfinals. The semi-finals and final are both played in a two-leg format. The format of Copa del Rey has changed over the years, with the advent of regional tournaments in the first round and the expansion of the cup over the years, making it a prestigious tournament. Through the incarnations, the tournament has been won by teams from the top divisions, including most recently Barcelona, Sevilla, Atlético de Madrid, Real Madrid, and Valencia CF. Historically, Copa del Rey has been won by clubs such as Athletic Club Bilbao, Real Betis, and Villarreal CF. In the 2016-17 season, Barcelona won the cup for a record 30th time, beating Alavés in the final. Among current players in the tournament, two players have a chance to make history-- Lionel Messi has won the Copa del Rey the most times with five, just one ahead of Andres Iniesta who has won it four times. As with most tournaments in football, there are several prestigious records associated with the Copa del Rey. Athletic Club Bilbao holds the title for most wins with over 30 cups; in recent years, Barcelona leads the way with 29 victories. The player to score the most goals has also been a coveted record, and currently the scoring record is held by Lionel Messi who scored 31 goals in 98 games. Overall, Copa del Rey is a historic, popular, and important tournament in the world of Spanish football. From the group-state regional tournaments to the quarter and semi-finals, the tournament is filled with rivalries and competition, featuring some of the top clubs and players in Spain.
