Argentine Primera B SoccerArgentine Primera B (also known as Primera Nacional) is the second division of professional soccer in Argentina. It features teams from all around the country, spread across four different regional divisions. The traditional Argentine soccer “Big Five”—Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing Club,Independiente, and San Lorenzo—all have teams in the league, though the most successful team in recent years has been Estudiantes de La Plata.
The current season format is a single-double round-robin system, which sees the top four teams from each regional division at the end of the regular season advance to the compete in the promotion playoff. Though the champion of the playoff gains direct promotion to the Primera Division, the remaining teams will compete in the relegation playoff to avoid demotion to the lower leagues.
Popular current players in the Primera B include Lisandro Lopez of Estudiantes de La Plata, Franco Sandaza and Emanuel Herrera of Club Sportivo Santa Lucia, and Joaquín Boghossian of Alvarado. Many of the stars of Argentina's national team got their stars in the Primera B, including Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Javier Zanetti.
Since it was founded in 1898, the Primera B has seen no shortage of legendary players and teams. Historically, this division has been the basis of some of Argentina's greatest soccer clubs, such as San Lorenzo (5 time champions), Estudiantes (4 time champions), Gimnasia y Esgrima (3 time champions), and Atlanta (2 time champions).
Throughout its existence, Argentine Primera B has established itself as one of the most competitive soccer divisions in Latin America. Notable moments in the history of the league include Atlético Tucumán's historic promotion to the Primera Division in 2006, and Huracán's comeback in the 2009-2010 relegation/promotion playoffs.
