The National Hockey League (NHL) is a winter pro ice hockey league, founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada. The league once consisted of only six teams in the US and Canada, with the original six teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Although there have been several expansions over the years, the original six teams remain in the league. Today, the NHL consists of 31 teams, including 24 in the US and seven in Canada, and is considered to be one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in the world. The NHL season consists of 162 games per regular season, where teams battle to get the coveted Stanley Cup and represent their country in the playoffs. The playoffs begin after the regular season ends and feature 16 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. During playoffs, the format is a best-of-seven series for each playoffs round. The most popular players in the current season include struggling Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs; big name Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues; Russian Magician Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins; Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers; and multi-talented Patrice Bergeron from the Boston Bruins. The NHL has several prestigious awards each season, including Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player displaying excellence each season; the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top rookie player; the Ted Lindsay Award, chosen by the players themselves to recognize the best player each year; and the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the top defenseman in the league. Hockey's history with the NHL dates back to the early 1900s, and its history is present to this day in the form of records and statistics. Some of the most iconic records in hockey against teams include the Detroit Red Wings with most consecutive seasons with at least one player scoring 90 points; the Montreal Canadiens with the most Stanley Cup Championships (24); and the Toronto Maple Leafs with the most consecutive playoff appearances (29). During the 2020-2021 season, Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, broke a long-standing NHL record of Hart Trophy winners scoring more than 120 points with his 126 points. With its rich history and current figures in the ice hockey arena, the NHL continues to be a beloved worldwide professional league and brings entertainment to its viewers across the world.

NHLThe Islanders visit Canada's capital for a contest against the Senators. New York is 5-5-5 on the road after going 0-2-3 in its last five such games. New York knocked off Ottawa 4-2 in November behind a goal and two assists by center Bo Horvat.
Colorado Avalanche at New Jersey Devils
NHLThe Avalanche continue a five-game trip as they play the Devils. The excursion started in dramatic fashion as newly acquired Scott Wedgewood entered the Dec. 3 game with Buffalo down 4-0, and stopped all 22 shots in a 5-4 Colorado comeback win.
Seattle Kraken at New York Rangers
NHLThe Rangers continue their season-high five-game homestand by clashing with the Kraken. New York has won six of seven meetings after a 2-0 victory in Seattle in November. Rangers backup goaltender Jonathan Quick turned aside 24 shots in that contest.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Vancouver Canucks
NHLThe Lightning head for the opposite side of the continent to play the Canucks. Tampa Bay is 5-5-1 on the road with Nikita Kucherov totaling 21 points in those games. The Bolts have won eight of the last nine meetings after a 4-1 victory in October.
Chicago Blackhawks at New York Rangers
NHLThe Rangers host the Blackhawks. New York has won seven of its last eight versus its Original Six rival, including both meetings in 2023-24. Former Chicago forward Artemi Panarin, New York's current leading scorer, had three points in those two wins.

St. Louis Blues at Calgary Flames
NHLThe Blues make the second stop in a four-game Western Canadian trip when they face the Flames. Since a 7-1 shellacking from Calgary on Jan. 24, 2022, St. Louis is 7-1-0 in the series. Robert Thomas (STL) had 10 points across those eight contests.
Detroit Red Wings at Ottawa Senators
NHLAtlantic Division combatants in the Red Wings and Senators start their season series. Ottawa returns home from a 1-1-1 trip. The Sens went 3-1-0 versus the Wings in 2023-24, winning twice in overtime, and have won 10 of the last 12 engagements.
Winnipeg Jets at Buffalo Sabres
NHLThe Jets try to find their footing when they land in Buffalo to play the Sabres. Winnipeg won its first seven road games in 2024-25, but is just 2-6-0 in enemy territory since Nov. 14. Kyle Connor leads the Jets with 18 points in those 15 road dates.
Columbus Blue Jackets at Vancouver Canucks
NHLThe Blue Jackets go up against the Canucks. Vancouver has struggled to a 3-5-3 record on home ice this season. However, Vancouver won three straight versus Columbus at Rogers Arena, with Quinn Hughes (VAN) posting eight points across those contests.
