NHL

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a winter pro ice hockey league, founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada. The league once consisted of only six teams in the US and Canada, with the original six teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Although there have been several expansions over the years, the original six teams remain in the league. Today, the NHL consists of 31 teams, including 24 in the US and seven in Canada, and is considered to be one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in the world. The NHL season consists of 162 games per regular season, where teams battle to get the coveted Stanley Cup and represent their country in the playoffs. The playoffs begin after the regular season ends and feature 16 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. During playoffs, the format is a best-of-seven series for each playoffs round. The most popular players in the current season include struggling Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs; big name Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues; Russian Magician Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins; Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers; and multi-talented Patrice Bergeron from the Boston Bruins. The NHL has several prestigious awards each season, including Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player displaying excellence each season; the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top rookie player; the Ted Lindsay Award, chosen by the players themselves to recognize the best player each year; and the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the top defenseman in the league. Hockey's history with the NHL dates back to the early 1900s, and its history is present to this day in the form of records and statistics. Some of the most iconic records in hockey against teams include the Detroit Red Wings with most consecutive seasons with at least one player scoring 90 points; the Montreal Canadiens with the most Stanley Cup Championships (24); and the Toronto Maple Leafs with the most consecutive playoff appearances (29). During the 2020-2021 season, Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, broke a long-standing NHL record of Hart Trophy winners scoring more than 120 points with his 126 points. With its rich history and current figures in the ice hockey arena, the NHL continues to be a beloved worldwide professional league and brings entertainment to its viewers across the world.

For the fourth straight season, the Kings and Oilers meet in the first round in this Game 1. Defending Western Conference champion Edmonton won the previous three series. Leon Draisaitl (EDM) led the NHL with 52 goals in the regular season.

St. Louis Blues at Winnipeg Jets

The Blues and Jets play Game 2 of this Western Conference first-round series. Winnipeg won its third consecutive Game 1 of a playoff set by coming back to beat St. Louis 5-3 on April 19. Kyle Connor (WPG) had three points and the game-winning goal.

Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars

The injury-depleted Stars try to tie up their first-round series with the Avalanche entering Game 2. Without key players Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen, Dallas couldn't stop Colorado's attack in Game 1, falling 5-1. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice.

Montreal Canadiens at Washington Capitals

The Eastern Conference-best Capitals host the Canadiens for Game 1 of a first-round set. Montreal was the final team to punch its ticket to the postseason. Washington has lost its last five playoff series since winning the 2018 Stanley Cup Final.

New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes try to take a 2-0 lead on the Devils in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Carolina outshot New Jersey 45-24 en route to a 4-1 victory in Game 1 behind forward Logan Stankoven's second two-goal playoff performance.

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs host the Senators for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Mitch Marner had three points and Anthony Stolarz collected his first postseason victory as Toronto took a 1-0 series lead with a 6-2 decision in Game 1.

Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning

Sunshine State rivals in the Lightning and Panthers play Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first-round series. The clubs have met in three of the last four postseasons with Tampa Bay (2021) and Florida (2024) both advancing to win the Stanley Cup.

Minnesota Wild at Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights and Wild collide for Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round series in Sin City. Vegas outlasted Minnesota 4-2 to deal the first blow in Game 1. Brett Howden (VGK) and Matt Boldy (MIN) both scored a pair of goals.

Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars

The Avalanche visit the Stars for Game 1 of their first-round series. Dallas ended the regular season on a seven-game slide. Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon shared the NHL lead with 84 assists. The Stars eliminated the Avs in the West semifinals in 2024.

New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes host the Devils for Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. The home team won all four meetings in the regular season. Carolina needed only five games to take out New Jersey during the East semifinals in 2023.

Minnesota Wild at Vegas Golden Knights

The Pacific Division champion Golden Knights take on the Wild in Game 1 of a Western Conference first-round playoff series. Minnesota finished fourth in the Central. Vegas has won five straight meetings, three this season by a combined 12-4 score.

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs and Senators engage in another Battle of Ontario in Game 1 of an East first-round set. This is just the third time both have made the playoffs simultaneously since four meetings in five postseasons from 2000-2004, all won by Toronto.
