Scottish PremiershipThe Scottish Premiership, formerly known as the Scottish Premier League (SPL), is the top league competition for football (soccer) in Scotland. It was established in 1998 and is contested by 12 teams. The 2021–22 season will be the 24th season since it was first introduced. It is the highest division of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).
The reigning champions are Rangers, who secured their 55th league title in a thrilling 2020–21 season, when they also won the Scottish League Cup. The current top teams include Celtic, Aberdeen, and Hibernian. Popular current players in the league include Ryan Christie of Celtic, Kieran Tierney of Arsenal, and Callum McGregor of Celtic.
The Scottish Premiership season runs from August to May, with each team playing each other home and away, making for a total of 33 games per team. At the end of the season, the team that finishes top of the table is crowned league champions. The teams that come in second to fifth place then enter the play-offs, competing for a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
Historically, the most successful team in the Scottish Premiership has been Celtic, with nine league titles in the past two decades. Aberdeen have won 4 titles and Rangers have won 3 titles since the league’s inception. Over the years, the record for the most goals scored in one season was achieved by Celtic in 2010–11, when they scored a remarkable 103 goals. The record for the fewest goals conceded was set by Rangers in the 2018–19 season, with only 18 goals conceded in 33 games.
