Baseball MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) is the premier professional baseball league in North America and is composed of 30 teams spanning the United States and Canada. It is the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in North America. The American League (AL) and National League (NL) eventually merged to form MLB in 1901, with the American League corresponding to the modern American League and National League corresponding to the National League. The regular MLB season consists of 162 games per team, beginning in March and ending in October. At the end of the season, teams that have the best records qualify for playoffs and the World Series. MLB is known around the world as the “national pastime” and has a long-standing tradition dating back to the late 19th century. A total of 676 players have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame since 1939. To be eligible, players must have been retired for at least five years. Currently, the most popular teams include the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. Prominent players in the MLB in 2021 include Mike Trout (Angels), Jacob deGrom (Mets), Ronald Acuna Jr (Braves), Christian Yelich (Brewers) and Juan Soto (Nationals). One of the unique features of MLB is utilize of statistics and analytics that help managers and players make decisions. The “Moneyball” movie exemplifies this concept of using statistical analysis to gain an advantage over the competition. Statistic such as on-base percentage, slugging percentage, strikeouts, home runs and runs scored have become commonplace terms. Overall, MLB is a tribute to its long-standing history and is the centerpiece of popular culture in North America.
