Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol

The Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol, also known as LPB, is the top professional basketball league in Portugal. It originated in 1983 and is the premier destination for some of the best players in Europe. The LPB is comprised of 14 teams from all over the country and is structured as a double round-robin tournament where each team plays each other twice during the regular season. At the end of the season, the eight highest-placed teams qualify for the playoffs, and the remaining teams compete in a play-out tournament. The playoffs feature two-legged ties, where the winner of the higher-placed team advances to the next round, and after four rounds, two teams will meet at the Grand Final. The most successful teams in the history of the LPB are SL Benfica and FC Porto who have won a combined 28LPB titles between them. Other notable teams include Sporting CP, Academica, União de Leiria and Vitoria Guimaraes who have been successful on numerous occasions. Some of the most popular Portuguese players currently in the LPB include Tiago Splitter, David Huertas, Rudy Fernández, Rui Lima, Simão Fragoso and Jorge Guerrand-Hermes. They have all won at least one title in the LPB, and are some of the best players in Europe. Since its inception, the LPB has grown into an acclaimed European basketball league, drawing in some of the best players and teams in the continent. It is also well known for being competitive and entertaining, and has produced some of the most memorable games and moments of basketball in Portugal.
