Liga MXLiga MX is the top tier of Mexican football, founded in 1943 with 9 teams that had a relegation and promotion system. Currently 18 teams make up the league and the season format consists of two separate tournaments that a team must qualify for in order to play. The first is Apertura, which typically starts in July and ends in December, and the second tournament is Clausura, running from January to May. Upon conclusion of Apertura and Clausura, the 4 best teams of both tournaments will qualify for the Playoffs which determine the champion of the regular season. Historically, the most successful team in Liga MX is Club America with 13 First Division titles (10 from Liga MX and 2 of the old "Primera Division de Mexico"). Other popular are Club Leon, Pumas UNAM, Chivas Guadalajara, Cruz Azul, Tigres UANL, Santos Laguna, Monterrey, Pachuca, and Puebla. Popular current players include: Club America’s captain and vice captain Paul Aguilar and Bruno Valdez, Tigres UANL’s André-Pierre Gignac and Guido Pizarro, Pumas UNAM’s Juan Dinenno, Club Leon’s William Tesillo, Chivas Guadalajara’s Alan Pulido, and Cruz Azul’s Jonathan Rodriguez. All of these players had phenomenal seasons in the Clausura 2020 campaign. Annually, the league includes a minimum of 182 matches with 306 goals, and a total of 3044 goals scored since the first match in 1943. Liga MX provides a platform for young, talented players to showcase their abilities and take the big step up to top leagues in Europe. Over the last few years, several prominent Mexican players have been sold to European teams such as Raul Jimenez from Club America to Wolves, Hirving Lozano from Pachuca to PSV, Carlos Vela from Chivas Guadalajara to Real Sociedad, and Gio dos Santos from Monterrey to La Galaxy. All in all, Liga MX is the most popular football league in Mexico and some of the best players from the country compete in it. The season format and playoffs combine to create an exciting tournament and many great moments for both teams and players.
