Segunda División de EspañaSegunda División de España, commonly known as LaLiga 2, is the second-highest division of the Spanish football league system, after the top-flight LaLiga. Founded in 1929 and then known as the Segunda División, it has been regularly played since 1935. It is contested by 22 teams, with the top two teams promoted to LaLiga and the bottom four being relegated to the Segunda División B. The season runs from August to June, with the teams playing each other twice, once at home and once away. The Segunda División is one of the most competitive divisions in Europe, and has produced some of the greatest Spanish football stars over the years, including the likes of Michael Laudrup, Andrés Iniesta, and Sergio Ramos. The two top-ranked teams at the end of the regular season are promoted to LaLiga. The third through sixth-place teams are entered into a play-off, and the winner is also promoted. The bottom four teams are relegated to the Segunda División B. This competition has produced several twists and turns throughout its illustrious history, including the “Granada Paradox” in 2004, when the team of the same name decided to remain in the division despite being relegated. The Segunda División also holds a two-legged promotion play-off. The league generally features some of the top teams in Spain, including Celta Vigo, Real Valladolid, Real Zaragosa, Rayo Vallecano, UD Las Palmas and Elche. These teams are well-known for their quality young talent, most recently highlighted by the likes of current stars such as Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal. Despite its respected history, the Segunda División is often seen as underappreciated, and arguably one of the best kept secrets of Spanish football. Nonetheless, the league continues to play an important role in the development of young talent and in creating high quality matches for fans all around the country.
