TriathlonTriathlon is a multi-discipline sport that combines swimming, cycling, and running into one race. It is one of the most popular and competitive sports in the world and is an Olympic sport since 2000. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is the official governing body of the sport. It organizes international and Continental Cups, World Championships, World Cups, Continental Championships, and the Olympic Triathlon. The season format consists of several races during the year which includes sprint triathlon, Olympic distance triathlon, ½ Ironman distance triathlon, and full Ironman distance triathlons. The top triathletes in the world compete in a series of World Triathlon Series (WTS) qualifying races for points which accumulate to qualify them for the Grand Final. The Grand Final determines the World Champion in each discipline and adds up the points from all the races of the season to award the World Champion title for the year to the athlete with the most points. In the USA Triathlon is governed by USA Triathlon (USAT). It offers races from Sprint to Ironman distance races. USAT awards include age-group athletes, paratriathletes, relays, and professional athletes. Popular teams and athletes in the professional triathlon world include Team Columbia Threadneedle, Team Timex, Team TBB, Team USA Triathlon, and Team X-Digest. Some of the top professional triathlon athletes are Jan Frodeno, Javier Gomez, Alistair Brownlee, Mario Mola, and Gwen Jorgensen to name a few. Later in the next century, it began to grow and gained popularity, developing into the sport as it is today. Its presence in the Olympics in 2000 has further added to its global expansion and its popularity.
