This 6-week trial divided both sides of the family in the Essa marriage. Testimony pointed out to lies, manipulation, betrayal, dishonesty and heartbreak.

Just before jury deliberations, the defense called for a mistrial over statements prosecutors made to the jury. The judge denied that motion. Yazeed Essa faced life in prison if convicted in the poisoning death of his wife, Rosemarie. After six weeks of court proceedings, the jury began their deliberation over Yazeed's fate. It took them just four days for them to reach an unanimous verdict.

The sentencing phase of Yazeed Essa began with emotional victim-impacted statements. After four days of jury deliberations, he was convicted for intentionally poisoning his wife to death. During the sentencing phase, both of Rosemarie's brothers gave emotional, tear-eyed testimony. Yazeed was convicted in murdering his wife and attempted to evade police when he took flight overseas which led to an 18-month international manhunt.

Jurors listened to Yazeed Essa's attorney during closing arguments trying to implicate one of his mistresses as the possible killer in Rosemarie's death. They outlined what they believed were holes in the state's case that left enough reasonable doubt for the jury to acquit Yazeed for his alleged role in his wife's death.

With a graphic checklist displayed for jurors, defense attorney Steven Bradley implored the jury not to judge Yazeed's alleged role in his wife, Rosemarie's death, with emotion and disdain for him as a cheating husband. According his defense, Yazeed giving his wife calcium pills was not evidence that he was looking to fatally poison her.

During the final remarks to the jury, the State expounded on their murder timeline. This timeline ended in the poisoning death of Rosemarie Essa and her husband, Yazeed, fleeing the country on the run from the law. Next, it was the Defense's turn to deliver their closing arguments. This would be the final time they would speak to jurors in their attempt to appeal to them Yazeed's innocence in the poisoning death of his wife, Rosemarie.

Dr. Yazeed Essa is alleged to have poisoned his wife, Rosemarie Essa, to death with cyanide. Essa fled the country when he became a suspect, prompting an international manhunt. He was arrested in Cyprus and extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial.
