Born and bred in Brooklyn, N.Y., Alby Sherman (Elliott Gould) has worked his whole life at his family's deli. But he has bigger ambitions -- namely, moving across the East River to open a high-end restaurant in Manhattan. Although he has a prime location wrapped up, Alby lacks the money to get started. When he asks his well-to-do uncle Benjamin (Sid Caesar) to make an investment, the man agrees -- if Alby will leave his girlfriend, Elizabeth (Margaux Hemingway), and marry a Jewish girl.
