Gaia, the spirit of the planet, assembles a diverse team of "planeteers," who are able to combine their powers to summon an elemental warrior that takes on the appearance of superhero Captain Planet. He works with the planeteers to defend Earth from pollution caused by criminals and villains. As the show's theme song says, Captain Planet is "gonna take pollution down to zero" by defeating the villains, who include the likes of Hoggish Greedly, Dr. Blight and Looten Plunder. The animated series was co-created by media mogul Ted Turner, a noted environmentalist.

While on vacation, Gi visits a dolphin research facility and stumbles upon Hoggish Greedly's scheme to use the dolphins to haul toxic chemicals from a sunken warship and sell them on the black market.

Wheeler takes a sabbatical from the team to visit his ailing father in Brooklyn, but discovers that his old friends now belong to an anarchist gang and take orders from Verminous Skumm.
S4, EP6 "Wheeler's Ark"
Gaia asks the Planeteers to return orphaned animals to their natural habitats, but the team discovers that pollution threatens all of the animals' homes.
S4, EP5 "The Unbearable Blightness of Being"
Dr. Blight creates an invention that transfers her mind into Gaia and uses her new powers to ravage the planet; trapped in Blight's body, Gaia must convince the Planeteers of the truth before the ecological damage becomes irreversible.
S4, EP4 "Missing Linka"
Linka receives a letter about a mysterious sickness spreading through her hometown and the Planeteers head there to investigate; overcome with concern for her town and her ailing grandmother, Linka gives up her ring and leaves the team.
