Gaia, the spirit of the planet, assembles a diverse team of "planeteers," who are able to combine their powers to summon an elemental warrior that takes on the appearance of superhero Captain Planet. He works with the planeteers to defend Earth from pollution caused by criminals and villains. As the show's theme song says, Captain Planet is "gonna take pollution down to zero" by defeating the villains, who include the likes of Hoggish Greedly, Dr. Blight and Looten Plunder. The animated series was co-created by media mogul Ted Turner, a noted environmentalist.

When Dr. Blight uses a new invention to take away Gaia's powers, the Planeteers and a powerless Captain Planet must find Gaia and return her to Hope Island before the Earth loses its spirit forever.

The Slaughters and Looten Plunder compete for a monopoly on the black market rhino horn trade, hunting the rhino to the edge of extinction.
S5, EP4 "Disoriented Express"
The Planeteers must call upon Captain Planet when Dr. Blight kidnaps Ella Salvador, a philanthropist heading up the construction of a new railway network designed to cut down on smog in South America.
S5, EP3 "The Ghost of Porkaloin Past"
Hoggish Greedly inherits his grandfather's estate and selfishly spends his new fortune against the terms of the will, which requires the money be used for environmentally-friendly projects; the Planeteers come up with a plan to change Greedly's ways.
