Dr. Mark Sloan is chief of Internal Medicine at Community General Hospital -- and sometime consultant to the local police department. When he's drawn into a case, he combines sleuthing and medicine to solve the crime. That crime is usually one his detective son, Steve, is working on as a member of the local police department. Dr. Sloan's medical colleagues, including doctors Amanda Bentley, Jack Stewart and Jesse Travis, are also frequently drawn into his investigations.
Mark comes to the defense of his schizophrenic former student, who can't explain his alibi after being charged with murder.
Dr. Sloan's son Steve nearly dies in a traffic accident then claims to have seen a murder take place in his hospital room.
Mark discovers that an impassioned love affair between a nurse and a 17-year-old hospital worker may be the motive for murder.
To investigate a possible murder, Dr. Sloan goes into a house of roommates who are monitored 24 hours a day by cameras for a national television series.
