This sitcom chronicles the misadventures of teenager Chris as he grows up in 1980s Brooklyn. Chris is surrounded by eccentric family members, including frugal father Julius, intimidating mother Rochelle, spoiled sister Tonya and younger brother Drew, who is more popular than Chris. The show is based on the life of comedian Chris Rock, who serves as the narrator for the show and is also an executive producer.

When Julius and Rochelle decide to raise Mr. Omar's rent, Mr. Omar demands they bring the apartment up to code; Chris has to do a book report and decides to watch the movie version of the book rather than read it.

Chris helps the football team with homework so he will be allowed to hang out with the cool kids; Julius starts a side job picking up bodies for Mr. Omar's funeral home.

Chris tries to break up Doc and his new obnoxious girlfriend (Robin Givens); Tonya starts wearing a bra to school to get attention from the boys.

Chris sneaks out to the movies with his friends and witnesses a shooting outside the theater; Julius and Rochelle go to a Broadway musical for their anniversary.
