Set in a storybook Connecticut town populated by an eclectic mix of dreamers, artists and everyday folk, this multigenerational drama about family and friendship centers around Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory. Lorelai owns the town's bed-and-breakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, with best friend/chef Sookie, and contends with weekly dinners with eccentric, well-off parents Richard and Emily Gilmore (who always have something to say about their daughter's life). After high school, Rory attends Yale University but frequently returns to Stars Hollow to visit her mom.

Rory is disappointed when Logan doesn't invite her to be his date at a book-signing party thrown by his father; Richard spies Emily talking to a former flame and rear-ends her car, forcing an opportunity for reconciliation.

After Richard and Emily renew their vows, Lorelai, Luke and Christopher find Rory and Logan together.

With the wedding called off, mother and daughter travel to Harvard University, where Rory gets a glimpse of college life and Lorelai confronts a past that could have been.

Luke takes in his wild 17-year-old nephew, ignoring Lorelai's well-intentioned advice; Rory is drawn to the new guy in town.
