Sex, Cyanide And A Doctor On The Run Case

S1, EP5 "Fleeing Out Of Embarrassment"

The Defense tried to portray the defendant's life as a happily married man in an upscale neighborhood with his wife, Rosemarie, and their two young children. His lawyer even claimed that the defendant and his wife were planning a vacation at the time of her death. According to his defense, it was embarrassment and not murder that led Yazeed to flee the U.S. and his secret life full of mistresses. One of whom was pregnant would be exposed to his neighbors, friends, and family.

S1, EP6 "Undetermined Homicide"

The first witness to the stand was the forensic pathologist who did the autopsy on Rosemarie Essa. At first, investigators believed she died from a car accident. But according to a toxicology report - they found poison in her system. Undetermined was the conclusion of the autopsy report. Dr. Elizabeth Balraj explained to the jury that cyanide poisoning was not a common occurrence in homicides. It is so rare that a specific test looking for cyanide was the only way to detect it.

S1, EP7 "Cyanide Poisoning"

The cross-examination began on the forensic pathologist on the stand. Dr. Elizabeth Balraj had concluded that cyanide poisoning was the cause of death for his wife, Rosemarie. When investigators came across calcium pills that had potassium cyanide in them, doctors shifted their exam on the victim to look for cyanide poisoning. Prosecutors needed to show the jury how Rosemarie death was part of an elaborate scheme to kill her with an undetected poison.

S1, EP8 "The ER Visit"

On the stand in Yazeed Essa's murder trial was the ER doctor who tried to save his wife, Rosemarie, when she arrived at the hospital. She had been in a car accident. But prosecutors alleged she had first been poisoned by her husband with cyanide-laced calcium pills. The jury learned about what happened in that emergency room where the victim was taken. Dr. Yazeed Essa, who happened to be an ER physician himself, was at the hospital when Rosemarie lost her life.

Dr. Yazeed Essa is alleged to have poisoned his wife, Rosemarie Essa, to death with cyanide. Essa fled the country when he became a suspect, prompting an international manhunt. He was arrested in Cyprus and extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial.
