Sex, Cyanide And A Doctor On The Run Case

Dr. Yazeed Essa is alleged to have poisoned his wife, Rosemarie Essa, to death with cyanide. Essa fled the country when he became a suspect, prompting an international manhunt. He was arrested in Cyprus and extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial.

S1, EP38 "Life As A U.S. Fugitive"

The long cross-examination of Yazeed Essa's alleged fixer was not over yet. When investigators said they began closing in on him as a suspect, Yazeed suddenly left the country. It was Jamal Khalife who said he helped him. Khalife claimed to have helped Yazeed Essa hide from U.S. officials and lie to police about his situation. But when Yazeed left Lebanon to go to Cyprus, where he would be arrested, he allegedly did not say goodbye or thank you. And to Khalife that was a stab in the back.

S1, EP39 "Capture In Cyprus"

Jamal Khalife testified that while living abroad the defendant drank a fifth of liquor and did drugs every day. This was on top of allegedly promising marriage to three different women in exchange for sex. Next, a police officer from the country of Cyprus took the stand. Yazeed Essa had been wanted in the death of his wife, Rosemarie, for 18 months. But then he flew from Lebanon to Cyprus. As soon as he got off the plane he was immediately arrested and held for potential extradition.

S1, EP40 "Medical School Training"

Jurors were brought back to the defendant's medical school training and education. A former co-worker and close friend of Yazeed Essa testified against him. Dr. Scott Felten confirmed that in studying to be an ER doctor, medical students learned about cyanide poisoning. Apparently, this was the same method prosecutors claimed Yazeed used to kill his wife, Rosemarie.

S1, EP41 "From ER Doctor To OB-GYN"

The ER doctor and good friend of Yazeed Essa was under cross-examination. The two learned about cyanide poisoning as medical school residents. Prosecutors wanted to link the defendant's knowledge of the poison to the death of his wife, Rosemarie. Next, jurors heard from the victim's OB-GYN. She confirmed the supplements she was taking at the time she died.

S1, EP37 "Falling Out With The Fixer"

Jamal Khalife testified that it didn't take long for Yazeed Essa to tell people in Lebanon that he killed his wife, Rosemarie, with cyanide. But under cross-examination, Khalife admitted that he was told Yazeed arrived in Lebanon because of tax evasion. Later, Khalife recalled for the jury the time he and the defendant eventually fell out and Yazeed ended up in jail in the country of Cyprus.

S1, EP36 "Federal Crimes"

Things got heated in the courtroom between the defense and Yazeed Essa's alleged fixer. His lawyer was trying to discredit him and his claims that the defendant confessed and bragged about killing his wife, Rosemarie. Jurors then listened to more background info about Jamal Khalife who claimed to have helped the defendant when he was a fugitive living in Lebanon. Khalife claimed to confirm federal crimes committed before and after Yazeed fled the U.S.

S1, EP35 "Discrediting The Alleged Fixer"

The Defense accused Jamal Khalife on the stand of making up his story about the defendant confessing to killing his wife, Rosemarie Essa. The reason? So he could get immunity for a 28-count federal indictment he was facing. During cross-examination, Yazeed's defense tried to discredit Khalife who helped him when he was a fugitive after the death of his wife. By bringing up the crimes Khalife was accused of, Yazeed's defense raised red flags to the jury about his credibility.

S1, EP34 "Jamal Khalife"

Prosecutors went deep into how the defendant, Yazeed Essa, fled the country and tried to hide in Lebanon after his wife, Rosemarie, died. On the stand was man who provided him a furnished apartment, fake ID's, and access to money. Jamal Khalife claimed that the defendant was getting arrogant while he was a fugitive in Lebanon, which Khalife claimed led him to getting captured. He was eventually extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial for the poisoning death of his wife, Rosemarie.
