Sex, Cyanide And A Doctor On The Run Case

Dr. Yazeed Essa is alleged to have poisoned his wife, Rosemarie Essa, to death with cyanide. Essa fled the country when he became a suspect, prompting an international manhunt. He was arrested in Cyprus and extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial.

S1, EP27 "Uncovering The Poisoned Calcium Pills"

The brother of Rosemarie Essa recalled the days after his sister lost her life. Dominic DiPuccio testified against her husband, Yazeed Essa, who was accused of killing her. Her brother claimed Yazeed's demeanor changed drastically when he learned that her family and friends knew about the poisoned calcium supplement. Yazeed was accused of using a cyanide-laced calcium pill to kill her so he could begin a relationship with one of his many mistresses.

S1, EP28 "Fear & Suspicion"

He abandoned his own kids and wasn't coming back. That's what the brother of Rosemarie Essa told jurors about the actions of Yazeed after police questioned him over her death. This emotional testimony came on Dominic DiPuccio's second day on the stand. The Defense questioned him under cross-examination. DiPuccio recalled how Yazeed fled the country right at the time police and his family began to suspect he may have been involved in sister's death.

S1, EP29 "Brother Plays Detective"

The cross-examination was underway with the brother of Rosemarie Essa. Dominic DiPuccio chose to adopt her two children when Yazeed Essa abandoned them and fled to Lebanon after the police questioned him about Rosemarie's death. DiPuccio could be considered the State's key witness because he was the one who pointed police to the poisoned calcium pills. Under cross-examination, Yazeed's lawyer tried to discredit him in the eyes of the jury.

S1, EP30 "Coroner's Case"

The legal team for Yazeed Essa was not done questioning his brother-in-law on the stand. Dominic DiPuccio recalled when Yazeed disappeared and abandoned his children, they searched his home, business, and computer looking for clues as to his whereabouts. The jury later heard about observations and comments made by the defendant after his wife, Rosemarie, died. On the stand was an ER processing secretary working the day Rosemarie was admitted. She confirmed her death was a coroner's case.

S1, EP26 "Dominic Dipuccio"

Jurors listened to emotional testimony from Rosemarie Essa's brother. Dominic DiPuccio recalled how he rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead after a minor car accident. The State alleged that a mysterious phone call revealed a sinister plot of the defendant trying to kill his wife, Rosemarie. That phone call claimed Yazeed encouraged her to take a calcium supplement just before she died.

S1, EP25 "Victim's Brother On The Stand"

The firefighter-paramedic on the stand explained to the jury how his team scrambled to try to save the life of Rosemarie Essa. She had been in a minor car accident. But even after she died, doctors were left wondering what exactly took her life. Next, the victim's older brother took the stand. Jurors heard another side of the story about his sister meeting and marrying the defendant, Dr. Yazeed Essa.

S1, EP24 "First Responders To The Car Crash"

The first set of police officers took the stand. This first one was a records keeper who released Rosemarie Essa's car from police custody to her husband. Jurors learned more about the car accident Rosemarie was involved in before she died. Prosecutors believed the defendant wanted his wife to die by poisoning but have it look like a car crash. These first responders arrived on the scene of this accident only to come across an unresponsive woman in her car.

S1, EP23 "Forensic Pathologist Clears It Up"

The cross examination began on the forensic pathologist who did the autopsy on Rosemarie Essa. Dr. David Dolinak testified that it was her brother who told investigators that she was taking calcium pills. This turned investigators' attention to the supplements and they eventually found cyanide in her stash of calcium capsules. After his wife's death, Yazeed gave cyanide-laced calcium pills to police just days before he fled the country in alleged panic and embarrassment.
