Heading into this college basketball season with games already getting underway, we are, for the first time, seeing several players in jerseys that are different from the ones they wore last year. Ever since the COVID-19 season, transferring schools in college sports has never been easier. There is no longer sitting out or delayed eligibility. Because of that, here are the top transfer players this season who will make a big and immediate impact on their new teams.

1. Hunter Dickinson – Michigan to Kansas

Hunter Dickinson has grown in every year he has played college basketball. He started out averaging 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game as a freshman at Michigan in 2020-21. In two years, he became an All-American, averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and dominating the inside for his team. After Michigan lost out on potential transfer Caleb Love and didn’t have a direct path to success, Dickinson decided to move elsewhere. He made his way to one of the blue-blood powerhouses: Kansas. He will join K.J. Adams and Kevin McCullar Jr. as a dynamic three-piece in the starting five.

2. Caleb Love – North Carolina to Arizona

Speaking of blue bloods, this next transfer, Love, also left a blue blood for another college. After spending three years at North Carolina and living the dream of being on the Cinderella team that went from the No. 8 seed in the NCAA tournament to the national championship game, Love came back to Chapel Hill last season but just didn’t click with RJ Davis or Armando Bacot. He departs after averaging 16.7 points per game and is now headed to Arizona where he will partner up with Oumar Ball and Keshad Johnson this season.

3. Max Abmas – Oral Roberts to Texas

Max Abmas was a star on a no-name team for almost his entire college career. Oral Roberts, for several seasons, were dark horses in the NCAA tournament because Max Abmas played for it. It went from Cinderella hopeful to favored winner in round one. Abmas averaged roughly 23 points per game in his final three years at Oral Roberts. This season, as a super senior, he will take his talents to Texas, the No. 18 team in the country. He will team up with Ithiel Horton and Tyrese Hunter after the departure of Marcus Carr, Sir’Jabari Rice and Timmy Allen all to the NBA from last season.

4. LJ Cryer – Baylor to Houston

LJ Cryer is not a household name. He is not a player who will go in and average 20 points per game and be a dynamic offensive threat. But he has defensive prowess and that is what makes this transfer so noteworthy. He will be joining a program that Kelvin Sampson has dedicated to being defensive-minded. Last year at Baylor, he averaged 15 points per game with two assists and a steal per game. He will be exactly what this Houston team needs alongside Emanuel Sharp and several other transfers.

5. Ryan Nembhard – Creighton to Gonzaga

For the first time on this list, this transfer might be considered a transfer down in team, at least based on rankings heading into his season. Ryan Nembhard was a valuable piece of Creighton’s run in the NCAA tournament last season. He averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game as a sophomore. He will make the jump to Gonzaga, who by name might have more popularity but by ranking is worse. We will get the opportunity to see Nembhard alongside Anton Watson and Rasir Bolton when Gonzaga opens up its season on Friday.

Regional restrictions may apply.
