No. 2 seed Utah will take its home court at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, against the No. 8 seed VCU in the quarterfinals of the NIT on Wednesday. The Rams finished their season with 13 losses, including to Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Championship game just six points away from a NCAA Tournament berth. They entered the NIT as one of the four bottom teams and took on No. 1 seed Villanova in the first round. They came away with a nine-point win, 70-61, with 17 points from guard Joe Bamisile in 27 minutes off the bench. Max Shulga, who averages 14.3 points per game, had just 10 points and six assists. Their Cinderella run continued in the second round with a 70-65 win over South Floria. Zeb Jackson led the team with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and four rebounds. Sean Bairstow had 13 points with six rebounds, and four assists in that win.

The Utes of the Pac-12 finished their season with 14 losses and were knocked out of the conference tournament in the quarterfinals by Colorado. They headed into the NIT as the No. 2 seed taking on and beating UC Irvine. In the 84-75 win, Branden Carlson led the team with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
Carlson has led the team in scoring all season. Heading into the second round game, Utah was able to get the best of Iowa from the Big Ten by nine points in a 91-82 win. Gabe Madsen had 31 points in that win while Deivon Smith finished with a triple-double, totaling 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
