The St. Louis BattleHawks travel to Detroit’s Ford Field on Saturday for their United Football League opener against the Michigan Panthers.
The Michigan Panthers, who won the USFL’s North Division title last season, host the St. Louis BattleHawks from the former XFL as the inaugural season of the merged United Football League kicks off at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday. The BattleHawks finished 7-3 last season, missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker to the now-defunct Seattle Sea Dragons. Michigan was just 4-6 last season, winning the division title in a three-way tiebreaker before losing to the defunct Pittsburgh Maulers in the semifinals. St. Louis is coached by 11-year NFL veteran Anthony Becht while former San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan leads the Panthers.

A.J. McCarron returns to quarterback the BattleHawks after throwing for 2,150 yards with 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season, completing 68.8% of his throws. Former NFL running back Wayne Gallman signed with St. Louis in January and will be the featured back. The team also got former Seattle All-XFL receiver Jahcour Pearson, who is out with an injury.
Quarterback EJ Perry joined Michigan late last season and takes over as the QB1 while the running back room has been completely overhauled with the additions of All-USFL pick Wes Hills, the league’s leading rusher with the New Orleans Breakers, and former Philadelphia Star Matt Colburn II. Stars offensive coordinator Marcel Bellefeuille is also in Michigan this season.
Breeland Speaks led the USFL with nine sacks last season and returns to anchor the Panther defense, with Corrion Ballard and Kai Nacua returning in the secondary. Veteran Pita Taumoepenu leads the St. Louis defensive line with Keylon Kennedy, Chris Payton-Jones, Channing Stribling and Qwynnterrio Cole making for a deep secondary group.
