Canada looks to make the championship match for the fourth time in a row against Czechia in the semifinals today.

The second semifinal of the day in the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship features the teams from Canada and Czechia. In the 22 years of this event Canada has played for Gold 21 times and finished in third place just once. Making it to the semifinals has historically been just a stepping stone to Canada playing for a gold medal in women’s hockey. This year Canada earned its way to the semifinals with a 5-1 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals. Their opponents, Czechia, defeated Germany in a 1-0 defensive grind to get to the semifinals for the third year in a row.

In the quarterfinal win over Germany the score was tied at 0-0 heading into the final period. Daniela Pejsova broke the tie just under 13 minutes into the final period scoring the only goal of the game to break the tie and advance Czechia into the semifinals.

For Canada, it cruised to a 5-1 win after scoring the first two goals and final three goals of the game against Sweden. There was a moment in the first period after Hilda Svensson scored that the game was still within reach for an upset. Then Canada turned on the offensive jets scoring once in the second period and two more times in the third.

The goals for Canada came from four different players led by R Fast scoring two goals, one in the first period and then again in the second. Laura Stacey also scored in the first, Natalie Spooner and Jaime Bourbonnais each finding the net in the third period. The winner here will advance on to play the winner of the United States and Finland from the first semifinal.
