Sweden (4-0-0, 12 points) leads Group B at the 2024 IIHF World Championships by two points with a game in hand over the second-place squad from the United States. On Saturday, the Swedes take on Latvia (3-1-0, 7 points). The Latvians come off their first loss of the tournament after back-to-back overtime victories and trail Slovakia, which also plays Saturday, by one point for fourth place and the final spot from the group for the knockout stage after winning the bronze medal — the nation’s first at the world championships — last year. Sweden shares second-place in the all-time medal count with Russia and host Czechia, all with 47. The Swedes’ last medal came in 2018 when it won its second consecutive gold, its 11th championship overall.

Sweden remained perfect at this year’s worlds with a 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Thursday. The Swedes outshot the Kazakhs 44-11 and scored one goal in each period. Marcus Johansson of the Minnesota Wild netted his team-best third goal in the first period, Linus Johansson of Sweden’s Färjestad BK scored in the second and Fabian Zetterlund of the San Jose Sharks lit the lamp in the third.

Latvia returns after two days digesting its 8-1 thrashing on Wednesday at the hands of Germany. Markuss Komuls of the ECHL’s Trois-Rivières Lions scored the only goal in the game for the Latvians. Captain Kaspars Daugaviņš of Dukla Michalovce in Slovakia leads the team with three goals and five points.

Swedish goalies Samuel Ersson of the Philadelphia Flyers and Filip Gustavsson of the Wild combined for a .931 save percentage through four games. Captain Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins also has three goals in the tournament, while Marcus Johansson and André Burakovsky of the Seattle Kraken each tallied six points thus far.
