Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Sergio PĂ©rez, qualified third but was assessed a three-position grid penalty after stewards determined he impeded Haas’ Ferrari’s’ Niko HĂ¼lkenberg during qualifying. That bumps Lando Norris of McLaren to P3 alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri now starts fifth, inside of PĂ©rez.
The Albert Park Circuit is a 3.28-mile temporary street course circling Albert Park Lake just south of the central business district in Melbourne. The circuit includes 14 turns and PĂ©rez set the record for the fastest race lap during last year’s event after the course was modified for the 2022 race, shortening it slightly and removing two turns.
Through two events this season, Verstappen and PĂ©rez are 1-2 in the driver standings, with Verstappen holding a 15-point lead. Leclerc is third, 23 points off the pace.
