Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets face off in their rain-delayed opener at Citi Field on Friday afternoon

After Thursday’s scheduled opener was washed out, the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets take the field on Friday at Citi Field to open the 2024 campaign. Both teams look markedly different from a season ago, including new managers in each dugout. Milwaukee promoted Pat Murphy from bench coach after Craig Counsell left to take over the Chicago Cubs. The Mets replaced fired Buck Showalter with former New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza. The Brewers’ busy offseason included trading ace Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles and added former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins in free agency. New York gets closer Edwin Díaz back after he missed last season recovering from a torn ACL.

Top prospect Jackson Chourio made the opening-day roster for Milwaukee after hitting .323/.373/.403 in spring training while catcher Eric Haase was designated for assignment on Thursday and recalled infielder Oliver Dunn from Triple-A Nashville. The team also placed pitchers Taylor Clarke, Wade Miley and All-Star closer Devin Williams on the injured list. Williams could miss at least three months with stress fractures in his back.

The Mets added free-agent DH J.D. Martinez last weekend and he will open the season in the minors after not getting any spring training action. They filled holes in the rotation with veteran lefty Sean Manaea and former Yankee right-hander Luis Severino while also signing outfielder Harrison Bader.

Veteran left-hander Jose Quintana gets the opening-day start for New York. Limited to 13 starts by injuries last season, the 35-year-old was 3-6 with a 3.57 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 75.2 innings. Right-hander Freddy Peralta drew his first opening-day assignment for the Brewers. He was 12-10 in 30 starts, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, striking out 210 in 165.2 innings.
