No. 10 Florida climbs to within a half-game of SEC lead, can clinch series win over No. 7 LSU on Sunday afternoon in Gainesville
No. 10 Florida (33-5) claimed its fourth straight win on Saturday, beating No. 7 LSU (30-5) in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series. The set continues Sunday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville with the Gators, at 8-2, just a half-game out of first place in the SEC. The Tigers fell to 8-5 in conference play, good for fifth in the 13-team circuit. Florida’s run of consecutive NCAA tournament bids stands at 20, with Women’s College World Series titles in 2014 and 2015. LSU’s streak of tourney appearances grew to 17 last season as it still pursues a first national title.

Florida broke through with a four-run sixth inning, powered by Reagan Walsh’s three-run home run, to post a 4-2 victory on Saturday night. Keagan Rothrock improved to 17-3 in the circle, allowing one earned run in a four-hit performance. Skylar Wallace slashes .479/.630/.958 while Walsh leads the team with 13 homers and Jocelyn Erickson has a team-best 51 RBI.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth on an infield single from Raeleen Gutierrez. Ali Newland singled home a run in the top of the seventh before Ciara Briggs took a called third strike to end it. Danieca Coffey hits .404/.500/.681, Newland has seven homers and Taylor Pleasants leads the Tigers with 34 RBI.
Rothrock has worked 127 innings this season with a 1.41 ERA and 0.92 WHIP for the Gators. Sydney Berzon took the loss Saturday to fall to 13-1. In 97 innings, Berzon has a 2.02 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 99 strikeouts.
