Indiana (24-18-1) clinched its Big Ten series against visiting Rutgers (24-18) on Saturday and looks to complete the sweep on Sunday at Kaufman Field in Bloomington. The Hoosiers improved to 9-5 in conference play, good for fifth place two games behind conference-leading Illinois. The Scarlet Knights, meanwhile, lost their fifth consecutive Big Ten game and at 3-11 are in 12th place in the 13-team circuit. Indiana played in last year’s NCAA tournament and made its lone College World Series appearance in 2013. Rutgers last played in the NCAA tourney in 2007 and reached the College World Series just once, way back in 1950.

Indiana broke out on top with a four-run second inning, keyed by Devin Taylor’s two-run triple, and iced the game with four more runs in the eighth, getting a two-run homer from Carter Mathison in its 12-6 victory. Drew Buhl got the win with five shutout innings in relief. Nick Mitchell slashes .364/.472/.564, Taylor and Mathison each have 10 home runs and Tyler Cerny leads the team with 46 RBI.
The Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to 5-4 with a three-run fourth inning, keyed by Josh Kuroda-Grauer’s two-run single. He hits .438/.505/.614 with 20 stolen bases in 22 attempts while Tony Santa Maria tops the club with 10 home runs and 42 RBI.
Neither team declared a starting pitcher for Sunday’s matchup.
