No. 18 LSU (21-10) ended a four-game losing streak with a victory over No. 7 Vanderbilt (23-7) on Thursday night. On Friday night, the Tigers and Commodores return to Skip Bertman Field for the second game of their three-game set. LSU, the defending national champion, is just 3-7 in Southeastern Conference play while Vandy fell to 6-4 with Thursday’s loss. The Tigers entered this season with a streak of 14 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and last year’s title was the program’s seventh. The Commodores have played in 17 straight NCAA tourneys and won it all in 2014 and 2019.

LSU jumped out to a 9-0 lead on Thursday and held on for a 10-6 victory, scoring six runs in the third inning and adding three more in the fourth. Josh Pearson and Mac Bingham each went deep for the Tigers while Brady Neal and Hayden Travinski drove in two runs apiece. Tommy White slashes .325/.419/.571, Jared Jones has a team-high 10 home runs and Travinski paces the team with 31 RBI.
Vanderbilt got back into the game with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before it was shut down the rest of the way. Jonathan Vastine capped the fifth with a three-run home run. RJ Austin hits .336/.423/.431 with team bests of 29 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Vastine tops the team with five homers.
Sophomore left-hander Gage Jump takes the ball Friday for LSU. In seven appearances, six of them starts, Jump is 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 26.1 innings, fanning 35. The Commodores go with junior right-hander Bryce Cunningham, who is 4-1 in seven starts with a 2.87 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 37.2 innings while striking out 57.
