As Cody escorts the captive woman away, he learns that she is Nancy Lowe (Nancy Gates), and that there is a sizable reward offered by her husband for her return. Cody and Mrs. Lowe must brave ruthless bounty hunters greedy for the reward, as well as the now-warring Comanches, to make it to safety.

Tensions mount as sunset approaches, and the townspeople must choose sides.

After riding into New Mexico, William Bonney and Pat Garrett are hired by rancher John Tunstall. Bonney's hard work wins Tunstall over, but his romance with the old man's niece makes foreman Bob Ollinger jealous. Learning of Bonney's criminal past, Ollinger leads a posse against him that kills Tunstall instead. Bonney vows to avenge his boss' death, and his ensuing killing spree earns him the nickname "Billy the Kid."

Wealthy rancher Sampson Drune is resented by members of the Romer family, who feel he swindled them out of their cattle. They retaliate by robbing Drune and fleeing with the money. Drune organizes a posse of townspeople and asks alcoholic Sheriff John Frazier to deputize the group. They head out in search of the bandits with Frazier in tow. Two days later, the Romers and Drune are dead, Frazier is wounded, and the money has disappeared.
