On his way to jail, bandit Tom Tanner (Forrest Tucker) escapes the law and is pursued by Andy Barclay (Randolph Scott), a federal marshal who believes that Tanner will lead him to a stash of stolen gold. Barclay changes horses at the ranch of Karen Galt (Dorothy Malone), planting the seeds of romance before following Tanner to a mine shaft where the stashed loot is hidden. But a gang of outlaws who also want the gold then arrives, forcing Tanner and Barclay to team up and fend them off together.

The inhabitants of a small western community turn on Jim Guthrie (Dana Andrews) when he becomes the prime suspect for a murder he didn't commit. Despite the danger, he comes back years later, discovering that he's still a wanted man. But a kindhearted local named Chris (Dianne Foster) believes his story, and together they begin a desperate search for the true culprit.

A vicious outlaw called Pecos Pete (Onslow Stevens) has long tormented the peaceful residents of a small frontier town. So these desperate people hire a dedicated new sheriff, Tex Miller (Glenn Ford), to bring this ruffian to justice. But, for all his determination, Tex is tricked by Pete and led into an ambush. Ultimately, it is the wily and brassy transplant Belinda "Bill" Pendergast (Penny Singleton) who uncovers Pete's true identity and plots a way to run him out of town once and for all.
