Widowed Les Martin is an ex-detective haunted by a case he left behind in Denver. When his Indian assistant, Wingfoot (Maurice Jara), is accused of murdering a Sioux chief, Army scout Wade Harper (Phil Carey) brings him to Fort Kearney, Neb., where Colonel Markham (Regis Toomey) insists the young man has the right to a fair trial rather than handing him over to the Sioux. While in jail, Wingfoot is forced to escape with ruthless prisoner Reno Benton (Lee Van Cleef). Wade sets out with a small party to rescue his friend, with the Sioux right behind him.

Hangman's Knot
Major Matt Stewart (Randolph Scott) leads a troop of Confederate soldiers on a raid, targeting a wagon that is transporting Union gold. All the Union soldiers are killed except for one, who informs Stewart that the war had already ended a month ago. Stewart leads the troop into hiding, knowing they could face murder charges. After capturing a coach driven by nurse Molly Hull (Donna Reed), the soldiers try to evade a group of bandits chasing them to steal the gold.

Luke has a reputation as a rogue, but he's reinvented himself as a man of God and plans to fix up the town's damaged church. But, to the dismay of some suspicious townspeople, he concentrates on mentoring an unsophisticated young woman, Lissy (Joanne Woodward).
