The Alamo
In 1836 Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) organizes a rebel army to liberate Texas from the brutal rule of Mexican dictator General Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarría). Though vastly outnumbered, Gen. Houston's volunteer army includes such folkloric figures as Jim Bowie (Jason Patric) and Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton). As Santa Anna's forces advance on San Antonio, the legendary general and his men prepare for a final heroic standoff at a battle-worn mission called the Alamo.
The Virginian
Determined to carve out a life on the new frontier, the Virginian (Bill Pullman) heads west to Wyoming. He signs on as foreman of a cattle ranch and begins romancing Molly Stark (Diane Lane), a quiet but pretty schoolteacher who's also from the east. An old rivalry rears its head in the form of Trampas (Colm Feore), a former friend who betrayed the Virginian. Another rancher begins a feud, and the Virginian must defend his honor while still hoping to gain Molly's approval.

Prostitutes Cody (Madeleine Stowe), Anita (Mary Stuart Masterson), Eileen (Andie MacDowell) and Lily (Drew Barrymore), work a saloon in the Old West. They're tailed by Pinkerton detectives, Cody's savings are stolen by a bandit (James Russo), and Eileen is wrongfully jailed for bank robbery. Outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) terrorizes 1800s Arizona, especially the Southern Railroad, until he is finally captured. Wade must be brought to trial, so Dan Evans (Christian Bale), the owner of a drought-stricken ranch, volunteers to escort him to the train. Along the trail, a grudging respect forms between the men, but danger looms at every turn, and the criminal's men are in pursuit.

In 19th-century Mexico two women (Penélope Cruz, Salma Hayek) from vastly different backgrounds join forces against a ruthless U.S. bank magnate (Dwight Yoakam) who is stealing land from defenseless peasants so that he can build a railroad. A New York detective (Steve Zahn) arrives on the scene to bring the ladies in, but instead they win him over to their side.
