Outlaw Wes McQueen (Joel McCrea) escapes from jail and travels to a meeting with his old partner-in-crime Dave Rickard (Basil Ruysdael). En route, McQueen dispatches a gang of bandits who try to rob the stagecoach and, in the process, wins the attentions of a young woman (Dorothy Malone) with whom he'd like to settle down. Convinced by Rickard to do one last heist, he finds out that his fellow henchmen are not to be trusted and the woman he truly loves is an ex-saloon girl (Virginia Mayo).

Ride the High Country

Reduced to transporting gold from a distant mine to a small-town bank, retired lawman Steve Judd (Joel McCrea) recruits friend Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott), who has been performing in a traveling carnival. Unknown to Steve, the restless Gil and a young drifter intend to steal the next gold transport. On the way, the men help Elsa Knudsen (Mariette Hartley) to break free from her zealot father and join her fiancé at the mine, not realizing the consequences that await them all.

Left as the only person who can look after Slim's four sons, Chuck brings the young boys on the road with him and tries to juggle parenting with his familiar life as a rootless ranch hand.

Now, moving west to track down those responsible for her father's death, she buys a casino near a town where Pete Lambert (Paul Kelly), one of her father's killers, resides, and enlists the help of the local sheriff, Tom Banning (Joel McCrea). A series of mishaps unexpectedly lands Tom in prison -- and Frenchie, having fallen in love with him, is left on her own to sort out the mess.

He betrays Rio and absconds with the loot, and Rio ends up in prison. Years pass before Rio finally breaks free to enact his long-plotted revenge. Tracking Dad to California, Rio learns he's become a sheriff -- which is no deterrent -- but when Rio falls for Dad's stepdaughter, Louisa (Pina Pellicer), he has second thoughts.
