A successful rancher, Tom Reece (Glenn Ford), forges a business venture with a Mexican landowner (Donald Randolph) but finds himself in a bind after squandering a lot of money at a hotel run by Frank Harris (Jack Lemmon). Just discharged from service, Capt. Devlin (Randolph Scott) and his cavalry pals Maitland (James Garner) and Clegg (Gordon Jones) travel to Devlin's brother's home, but arrive to see the place overrun by American Indians. Devlin's sibling is killed because of his shoddy ammo, so the captain and his friends decide to hunt down the man who sold the bum bullets. They ride into town and find that the culprit is Clark (James Craig), a rich businessman who has the law in his pocket.

Tragedy seems to follow Pearl Chavez (Jennifer Jones) everywhere she goes. After a domestic dispute results in the death of both of her parents, Pearl moves in with her aunt, Laura Belle (Lillian Gish), on an expansive farm. When Pearl notices Laura Belle's son, the fiery Lewt, life on the ranch erupts into chaos. The two have a brief courtship, but Lewt abruptly ends the relationship. When Pearl tries to move on, Lewt's jealousy leads to a climactic gun battle between the former lovers.

When aging loner Will Penny (Charlton Heston) is hired to ride the lines around a vast ranch, he stumbles upon Catherine Allen (Joan Hackett) and her son, who are secretly living in an abandoned cabin. Penny gives Catherine and her son a week to move out, but an encounter with some ghosts from his past leaves him wounded and reliant on her. Penny soon finds himself falling for Catherine and becoming a father to her son, but his past continues to haunt him, hurtling him toward a confrontation.

They begin rehabilitating the ranch, but after a fatal gunfight, Covington and his men are given an ultimatum: leave town in three days or suffer the consequences.
