Virginia City
Near the end of the Civil War, Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins) travels to Libby Prison to convince Cmdr. Vance Irby (Randolph Scott) to help transport gold from Virginia City to the South. Union intelligence agent Kerry Bedford (Errol Flynn) breaks out of the prison and, learning of the plot for the gold, travels to Nevada, meeting Julia on the way. Sensing Julia is attracted to Kerry, Vance asks her to help set a trap while desperados led by Murrell (Humphrey Bogart) also close in on the gold.
Montana
Aussie shepherd Morgan Lane (Errol Flynn) moves all the way to Montana in hopes of finding the perfect terrain for raising his sheep, but the local ranchers aren't keen on sharing their land with outsiders. Before long, Morgan clashes with powerful cattleman Rodney Ackroyd, and their rivalry is only intensified when Ackroyd's fiancée, Maria (Alexis Smith), has eyes for Morgan. However, her sympathies still lie with her lover, and it seems that only a gunfight can settle the conflict.
Silver River
Former soldier Mike McComb (Errol Flynn) cleans up a gambling town and takes the gambling equipment to start his own enterprise out West. On a riverboat trip, Mike prevents Banjo Sweeny (Barton Mac Lane) from stealing the equipment and alienates singer Georgia Moore (Ann Sheridan) and her husband, Stanley, all of whom are headed to Silver City, Nev. There, Sweeny and Georgia blackball Mike, who hires lawyer Plato Beck (Thomas Mitchell) and battles to establish himself as a gambler and banker.

Gideon (Pierce Brosnan), a former Union officer, finds himself the prey of a manhunt led by Carver (Liam Neeson), Gideon's Civil-War nemesis.
