The defendant pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity claiming she had a psychotic break during the attack.

But investigators later found out that that claim wasn't exactly true. On the stand was an investigator who worked the gory scene at the Powell family home. He presented the jury with a number of bloody crime scene photos. The State claimed Sydney confronted and cornered her mother in her bedroom and fatally attacked her with an iron skillet and a kitchen knife.
