Her attorney, Alan Jackson, told the jury that the prosecutors lied and that the accusation that Karen read killed her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, was a quote travesty of justice. He said John O'Keefe went inside the Albert home after being dropped off and was later beaten up and dumped in the snowy front lawn.

Her defense relied on not one, but two crash reconstructionists for its case to try to dispute the state's claim that read drove her SUV in reverse to hit John O'Keefe hard enough to knock him to the ground. Dr. Andrew Rentschler testified that his team's vehicle test showed greater damage to the taillight, compared to the damage found on the defendant's SUV.
