The reality of the broken marriage between Gary and Melody Farris was explained further for jurors. The couple's youngest son happened to be a 35-year-old farmhand who lived and worked on the 10-acre property. Despite the Defense's hints of Scott Farris in being the real killer in this case, prosecutors argued instead that he had no motive to kill his father. One, he was completely reliant on him financially and two, he emotionally testified through tears that he loved his father.

According to Emily, her years-long affair wrecked the family. The jury then learned more about the drama in the family in the lead up to Gary's fatal shooting. S1, EP39 "Homicide And The Family Divide"

Melody Farris' daughter recalled the day her dad, Gary, was found dead with his remains charred in a burn pile. Things got emotional when Emily Farris recalled for the jury the moment she learned her father was found dead. She had her own suspicion that her mother had something to do with her father's death. This came as soon as investigators found the bullet lodged in the chest of Gary's remains and concluded his death was a homicide.

S1, EP40 "The County Coroner"

The county coroner arrived on the scene where Gary Farris's human remains were found in the burn pile. This coroner happened to live just up the road from the 10-acre Family Estate. It took several months for a death certificate to be finalized in Gary's death. It took nearly a year for police to narrow down their homicide in his fatal shooting when they arrested his wife, Melody, in another state.

S1, EP36 "Denying Any And All Involvement"

Melody Farris' defense team wasn't letting Scott off the hook. Her lawyer argued that with his height and weight only he could've shot and killed his dad, Gary, and dragged his 300-pound body to a burn pile to have his remains charred. Scott denied having any role in killing his father and disposing of his body. He admitted to the jury that he fully understood why investigators deemed him a suspect in the homicide.

S1, EP35 "I Was A Suspect"

Gary and Melody Farris' son who was living on the farm with them had to defend himself on the stand. Scott, who first discovered his father's remains, was being accused by his mother's defense as being the real shooter in Gary's death. Scott testified that he was told that he was a suspect in his father's death soon after he came across his remains. But until the arrest of his mother for first-degree murder nearly a year after Gary was killed no other persons were treated as suspects by police.

S1, EP33 "The Money Exchanges"

Who had the debit card? Gary Farris' son living at the farm or his wife, Melody? That was a question raised during Scott Farris' cross-examination. The Defense dismissed the State's assertion that Melody killed her husband so she could reap money from his multi-million dollar estate. A murder weapon was never found. The .38 caliber bullet found in Gary's remains did not match the revolver Scott came across. Jurors also learned there were a sheer amount of firearms on the family property.

According to prosecutors in their opening statements, money was the motive for this murder. Next, Melody Farris' defense delivered their opening remarks to the jury. They claimed police acted on confirmation bias when they allegedly narrowed erroneously on the defendant for the death of her husband, Gary. A complicated family coupled with a complicated police investigation all led to fingers pointing at Melody Farris for first-degree murder.
