In the 1980s, geeky Adam uses a video camera to document his family's crazy life. His mother, Beverly, is overprotective and lacks boundaries, while his dad has a hot temper and finds it difficult to parent without screaming. Rounding out the clan are Adam's terrifying sister, Erica; his older brother, Barry, who has middle-child syndrome; and the family's beloved grandfather, Al "Pops" Solomon. Pops is responsible for wild antics, including offering drinks to Barry and teaching Adam about the ways of love -- which create more chaos in an already high-strung family.

With everyone preoccupied with the new baby on the way, Erica's graduation is met with lackluster enthusiasm from Beverly and Geoff; Adam's new job is in jeopardy; Barry tries to be the new man of the house.

Adam decides to make a movie about his grandfather for a class assignment but finds all of Pop's war stories mundane; Erica confronts Beverly about her mothering style; Beverly worries about teaching Erica and Barry basic life skills.

When coach Mellor tells Beverly about his strained relationship with his brother, she intervenes, prompting a face-off; Geoff and Erica struggle with their long-distance relationship.

With the children growing up, Beverly decides to reinvent herself; Erica struggles to balance her academic and social life in college, and seeks Adam's assistance.
