Ralph Kramden is a perpetually flustered but eternally optimistic New York City bus driver living with his wife, Alice, in a small Brooklyn apartment. Ralph's best friend is sanitation worker Ed Norton, who lives in the same building with wife Trixie.

The Kramdens and the Nortons discover that television, instead of killing conversation, stimulates it.

Alice adopts a puppy and Ralph inadvertently feeds dog food to his boss.

Ralph can't take $1,000 he won; Ralph thinks Alice is pregnant.

Ralph doesn't know Alice has a job at a doctor's office; Ralph thinks Alice wants him only for his life insurance benefits.
