This sitcom chronicles the misadventures of teenager Chris as he grows up in 1980s Brooklyn. Chris is surrounded by eccentric family members, including frugal father Julius, intimidating mother Rochelle, spoiled sister Tonya and younger brother Drew, who is more popular than Chris. The show is based on the life of comedian Chris Rock, who serves as the narrator for the show and is also an executive producer.

Chris becomes popular when he fills in for the neighborhood DJ, who is arrested during a party.

Chris must choose between going to a ballgame with his father or going to the movies with Tasha.

Chris is put in charge of doing the family's laundry and must endure a Saturday at the laundromat with Drew and Tonya.

Rochelle decides to use the food stamps Julius finds, but when a friend sees her in the store, she panics and dips into the family's spending money.
