In this comedy, married New York couple Paul and Jamie Buchman (Paul Reiser, Helen Hunt) share their lives and offer wit and wisdom about relationships. Paul is a documentary filmmaker and Jamie works as a public relations specialist. Together, they grow and mature as they learn the art of staying married and loving it. Along for the ride is their ever-tolerant dog, Murray; Jamie's best friend, Fran; Jamie's sister, Lisa; and Paul's cousin, Ira. Playing recurring characters on the series are veteran actors including Lisa Kudrow and Hank Azaria.

Paul and Jamie hire a professional dog walker (Hank Azaria) to care for a neglected Murray; Paul becomes convinced that Murray likes the new dog walker better than him.

The Buchmans go to a dog park to meet new people; Paul offers theater tickets to a couple for a double date, but the tickets have already been promised to Fran and Ira, forcing Paul to lie to his cousin.

Everyone has plans for New Year's Eve: Paul is scheduled to film the ball dropping festivities in Times Square while Jamie is going to the Mayor's ball. Plans change as the year's final minutes count down.

An unexpected visit from Paul's parents (Cynthia Harris, Louis Zorich) on Jamie's ovulation day ruins Paul and Jamie's plans; Paul's sister reveals that she is gay.
