Half-sisters Mona and Dee Dee are virtual strangers who have grown up separately and suddenly become neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building. Mona is a budding music executive raised by her single mother to be free-spirited and independent. By contrast, younger Dee Dee is a privileged honor-roll collegian who grew up in a two-parent home but seeks her identity out of the shadow of her overbearing mother.

Dee Dee rekindles an old flame; Spencer tries to convince a musician (Billy Dee Williams) to sign a contract with Delicious Records.

Mona discovers that Nick's parents (Meredith Baxter and Martin Mull) made racist comments about interracial relationships; Phyllis fears her relationships may be jinxed.

Mona gets upset when her boss takes credit for the Delicious Records talent search.

Dee Dee begs for an introduction when she learns her mother's co-star (T.C. Carson) is the husband of her role model, Maxine (Erika Alexander).
