Manchester United can move above Tottenham Hotspur provided they beat their Premier League guests on Sunday. The north Londoners hope to end a three-match winless run against the Red Devils.
Jose Mourinho returns to Old Trafford and will lead the Spurs for their fifth fixture in the space of 10 days, having won in midweek to advance in both the UEFA Europa League and the Carabao Cup. Spurs came from behind on Tuesday to draw against Chelsea and beat their rivals on penalties to take a spot in the League Cup quarter-finals. They then thrashed Maccabi Haifa 7-2 less than 48 hours later to qualify for the Europa League group stage in scintillating style.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s schedule hasn’t been quite as frantic, with United now looking to seal a fourth consecutive win in all competitions. They return home following back-to-back wins at Brighton & Hove Albion, but a beefed-up Tottenham team poses a far greater threat.
The Manchester giants will be even more motivated to take full advantage of any Premier League matchup after they were drawn in what could be viewed as the ‘Group of Death’ in this season’s UEFA Champions League:

Old Trafford has proved difficult terrain for Tottenham to traverse to in recent years having lost in six of their last seven visits to the ground. Mourinho had barely been at their helm for a week prior to their last trip in December—a 2-1 defeat sealed by Marcus Rashford’s double—though he’s had more time to prepare a team this time around.
The two clubs have found their names overlapping in the transfer gossip headlines this summer, but Real Madrid exports Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon both found their way to north London, rather than Manchester.
Reguilon—who was at fault for Chelsea’s opener in the League Cup in midweek—could make his Premier League bow at Old Trafford, though the clash will come too soon for Bale ahead of his second Spurs debut, via the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick:
Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes are understood to be slight doubts for the hosts following knocks in Wednesday’s win at Brighton, either of whom would be a major absence for Solskjaer.

United only just edged Brighton 3-2 by virtue of a dramatic call from the video assistant referee in their last league outing, a first win in the top flight this term following the opening defeat to Crystal Palace. Solskjaer’s team have looked lacking despite the current run of three straight wins. Mourinho would be only too happy to exploit any weakness against the last club to fire him.
Harry Kane will be key after scoring his 12th Tottenham hat-trick against Maccabi Haifa on Thursday, though the frontman has been more useful as a provider of late, with five assists in his last two league games.
